The Voicemail That Changed Everything

I was sitting at my desk years ago when my phone rang. I let it go to voicemail. Nothing special. But when I checked it—everything changed.

It was my boss. Just a quick message—maybe 20 seconds. But in those 20 seconds, he said, “I saw what you did, and I just want you to know—I’m proud of you. That was exceptional.”

Y’all—I saved that voicemail. Played it for my significant other at the time. I felt so seen. So appreciated. Like I was loved.

And what do you think happened after that?
I worked harder. I cared more. I wanted to win for him.


The Trap: Thinking Praise Is Fluff

Somewhere along the way, leaders started believing that praise is “soft.” That recognition is some fluffy, feel-good nonsense that doesn’t really drive results.

Let me challenge that.

Praise is not fluff. It’s the fuel.

It’s the difference between someone dragging themselves to work… and someone showing up on fire.

And here’s the kicker: It costs you nothing. It takes 20 seconds. But it has lifelong impact.


The Fix: Say It, Mean It, Repeat It

Here’s your mindset reset:
Pick one person today who deserves to feel seen. Could be a team member. A peer. A friend. Even your child or your partner.

🎯 Say something specific they did that made a difference.
🎯 Tell them what it meant to you.
🎯 Don’t wait for a perfect moment—create it.

And if you’re feeling resistance right now—if you’re thinking “they already know”—I promise you: They don’t. Say it anyway.
